What is the Net Zero Goal?

Zero has never been so valuable! According to the calculations made to eliminate the most destructive impacts of climate crisis: we would like to half GHG emissions from human activities by 2030 and to completely zero these out by the midcentury, i.e., by 2050.

Net zero emission aims to offset the GHG amount we generate with the GHG amount that is naturally absorbed by the planet. In other words, net zero refers to the point at which we stop increasing the load on the atmosphere and means keeping new emissions as low as possible.

Why is Net Zero Emission Required?

According to the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we have to reduce the amount of gases with the greenhouse effect to net zero in order to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. This is a limit at which we can control climate change and its adverse impacts on our planet.

If the global balance is destroyed, it is not scientifically possible to tackle climate crisis. As the globe continues to warm up as long as concentration of gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxide remain high in the atmosphere, it would be inevitable for the glaciers to melt, sea levels to rise, incidents of drought and hot air waves to increase, seasonal balances to be disrupted, fresh water and nutritional resources to be depleted, and extreme and variable weather events to be experienced more frequently.

In short, it is imperative to speed up reducing our emissions in every sector! With the EU Green Deal which was put on the table in 2019 in order to prevent the adverse impacts of climate change and global warming, Europe aims to reduce carbon emissions by 55% by 2030 and to achieve the net zero plan by 2050.

Climate Crisis Around the Corner

We have already started to feel the increase in temperatures due to GHG emissions. We have been experiencing extreme weather conditions, drought, and wilds fires in recent years in Turkey. The last five years have been the hottest years consecutively since 1850. Extremely hot summers are part of our lives now.

Moreover, the Mediterranean basin is one of the most fragile ecosystems in the world. As a Mediterranean basin country, Turkey will feel the adverse impacts of climate crisis more than most of other countries. This is not limited to biodiversity loss, rising temperatures and drought. Turkey will start to talk about climate refugees in the coming years.

Red alert for humanity

We have depleted our resources and transformed our ecosystem as if we have another planet to live on and we have long passed through the threshold of climate crisis as a result.

Hundreds of scientists have worked on the ‘Climate Change 2021’ report for five years and they reached the following conclusion: Global warming was caused by humans without a doubt. And the report which puts forward the ‘inevitable’ results of climate crisis has already been labeled as “The red alert for humanity!” .

An incredibly monstrous picture is laid before us in the report.

• According to the report, it is predicted that the planet will warm at least by 1.5°C in all the possible scenarios. There is no scenario in which this critical threshold is not passed.
• Even in the scenario where the most ambitious plans have been implemented in order to control the global GHG emissions, this threshold will be passed by 2040.
• The report also predicts that sea levels will rise up to 2 meters at the end of this century. This is a serious threat for the cities on the coast such as Istanbul.

The report also has some good news even though the scenarios are dark. We can focus on our own net zero goal with the simple changes we can make in our own daily lives in addition to collective works. So, what are these changes?

Saving energy in our homes and workplaces and taking insulation measures are valuable efforts. Having a vegetable diet and reducing food waste are also important steps towards decreasing our carbon footprint. Little steps we can take in our daily lives such as using public transportation instead of using private vehicles and recycling/upcycling can have big impacts.

However, ‘individual solutions’ are not enough in tackling the climate crisis. We have already gone into this subject in detail in one of our previous posts. To read our blog post about climate crisis and the role of individuals, click here.

Collective Effort Required

As we have mentioned before in our post titled ‘Climate Crisis and The Role of Individuals,’ fossil fuel companies are responsible for two thirds of carbon emissions across the globe. 2020 Carbon Majors Report reveals this fact.

Yet, 'individual' solutions are still stated vastly when 'measures to be taken against the climate crisis' are discussed. Focusing on the individual impact, however, causes serious harm to the global gravity of climate crisis. It takes the focus away from those who have the biggest capacity and responsibility in terms of making a meaningful change. Individualization of responsibility understates the roles of fossil fuel companies, states, and local governments in climate crisis. Therefore, the issue of 'personal responsibility' carries the risk of delaying the required climate actions by states and companies.

States, international platforms, local governments, and large companies should assume responsibility in order to achieve the net zero goal. And this is the exact point at which the renewed significance of ‘individual responsibility’ comes into play. As citizens, we have the power of drawing the attention of local and national executives to climate crisis. A collective effort is required in order to achieve the ‘net zero’ ideal.

How to Achieve the Zero Emission Goal?

So far, only eight countries have been successful in achieving the net zero goal. These are Bhutan, Comoros, Gabon, Guyana, Madagascar, Niue, Panama, and Surinam. However, there are more than 130 countries across the world which set the net zero goal, including Turkey. These countries pledged to achieve the net zero goal by 2053.

A structural and economic transformation is required to achieve this goal, i.e., to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. A collective effort that includes the industries, countries and sectors which have a high carbon footprint is required. But, how?

• Invest in green energy.
• Focus on energy saving and energy efficiency in all sectors, particularly agriculture, transportation, aviation, and industry.
• Increase energy efficiency in urban planning policies.
• Reduce fossil fuel (coal, petroleum etc.) utilization and increase renewable energy sources and electric vehicle usage.
• Invest in new and green technologies such as carbon capture.
• Stop deforestation. Take measures to prevent biodiversity loss.
• Attach significance to green city planning.

Zero is the only promising number! We all should assume responsibility. Companies, local and national governments should act together. At Enerjisa, we know that we are responsible for building our common future.

What we do at Enerjisa

We, at Enerjisa, are the leading electricity distribution, retail, customer solutions and e-mobility company in Türkiye. It is a top priority for us to become a role model in our industry and be a pioneering company in green energy.

As a company committed to providing sustainable energy solutions, we are aware of the importance of taking action in tackling climate change. While supplying energy, we set our main goal as to minimize our environmental impacts; we set climate goals and implemented various strategies in order to reduce our carbon footprint, protect limited resources and promote renewable energy. We sustain our activities accordingly.

56% of our installed capacity is composed of domestic and renewable energy resources. We keep putting all our efforts for Türkiye as well as future generations through our 12 hydroelectric power plants, 5 wind power plants and 2 solar power plants.

We define all our priorities regarding our investments and strategies as part of sustainability.

We continue to invest in renewable energy resources. We support the sustainability transformation of organizations via our services provided as part of Energy of My Business projects of Enerjisa. The SENTRUM project that we launched in Küçükköy, Ayvalık enabled us to develop sustainable tourism practices of future today. In order to get further details on SENTRUM and check the Green Destination Küçükköy report, click here.

It is time to rethink our impact on the world without despair. We, at Enerjisa, will continue to shape our future on this path we took with the motto, ‘A Better Future for All.’
