What is Energy Efficiency?

Energy efficiency is the process of using less energy to perform the same function. Energy efficiency aims to eliminate waste and extravagance. Common Misconceptions About Energy Efficiency

Energy saving – the concept of reducing energy consumption by minimizing energy-consuming activities – is often confused with energy efficiency. The main difference between the two concepts can be summarized under three main headings;

1. Energy efficiency does not require you to change your habits.
Energy saving requires a certain degree of sacrifice, such as using the tumble dryer less often or turning down the heat in the winter. Energy efficiency, on the other hand, uses less energy while providing the same amount or quality of output/result. Instead of turning down the heat, you can install an efficient boiler to keep your home at a certain temperature while consuming less energy than a traditional boiler. Another misconception is that energy efficient options are not worth buying because they are more expensive than traditional alternatives. However, energy efficiency should be thought of as an investment that accumulates savings over time, rather than a typical purchase that is evaluated based on upfront costs.

When you upgrade to an energy-efficient system, the lifetime savings on your electricity bill have the potential to offset the total purchase price, creating a positive return on investment (ROI). Plus, a long-term energy-efficient upgrade/install can add value to your home after resale.

Traditional options offer lower upfront costs, but require more frequent replacements and create higher utility costs, reducing the benefits of the savings.

3. Big energy savings require an investment.

A common misconception about energy efficiency is that replacing just a few appliances will result in significant savings. To make significant savings, consider a holistic approach that strategically targets energy wasting sources in your home or business.

For example, the electricity consumed by appliances that are off or in standby mode, known as “phantom load,” can add $100-$200 to your annual utility bill. While your first instinct may be to replace the appliance with a more energy-efficient version, consider a smart power strip first. Smart power strips shut off when they detect that the appliances are not being used, effectively eliminating the phantom load from plugged-in devices.

This contribution is, for example, by setting fuel economy standards in the transport sector, using efficient heat and steam technologies in industry, and by providing efficiency gains in all end-use sectors.

While the cost of a holistic approach to energy efficiency may seem daunting, the savings and increased value of the building from such upgrades justify the entire investment.

Small changes can add up to big savings:

• Turn off lights when you’re not using them.

• Don’t put furniture in front of radiators.

Energy efficiency measures enable us to create products, services and benefits at the lowest energy cost. And because energy efficiency reduces the amount of wasted energy, it provides many important benefits, including:

• The opportunity to delay or eliminate the need to build capacity with new types of facilities that keep electricity rates lower,
• Lower electricity bills for utility customers who participate in energy efficiency programs and lower rates for all customers,
• The opportunity to avoid grid curtailments, especially during peak hours, and increase grid reliability,
• Reduced environmental impacts,
• Local job creation and economic growth,
• Improved health, comfort and productivity for all citizens.
